CIVIC DESIGN AWARDS 2008

Citation Awards

Evergreen Community College, Whitehorse Hall – Arts & Sciences Building

LMN Architects

Jury Comments:
This project unites two distinct but interrelated disciplines. The integration of Arts and Sciences by the client is to be commended regardless of whether it was due to budget, pedagogy of other forces. The building has a clarity of organization and is sensitive to the integration of interior and exterior space. The clear structural concrete frame serves to enclose the building and yet the architect was not afraid to break those rules at special places such as the northeast entry and courtyard entry. The interior spaces embody high volumes with extensive natural light. Also the exterior detailing of the corrugated metal divided by the red provides relief and scale to the exterior of the building.

Jury Comments:
This un-built project represents a great clarity of ideas and intentions. The architects clearly understood that the bridge needed to function programmatically, symbolically and experientially. The bridge as seen from above represents a contrail of an airplane. This occurs both during the day as well as night. The structure is both visually and structurally light weight and moving through the bridge will provide a wonderful transformation for the museum to the large commercial airplanes on display. This project embodies the principle of architecture extending far beyond program to create a wonderful civic experience.

City of Tacoma, Center for Urban Waters

Jury Comments:
This project is an excellent example of how restraint in architecture can produce an excellent building. From the articulation of the structural frame that encloses the roof, wall and floor to the sensitivity of the water edge and the beauty of the green roof the building expresses a clarity and simplicity that is both beautiful and difficult to achieve. The window curtain walls expresses detail appropriate to the site and function and will be a beautiful composition from across the river. The city of Tacoma will have a new addition to their city of which they can be very proud.

Jury Comments:
This project succeeds at many different levels, from site and context integration to material expression and structure. The building opens to the civic nature of the neighborhood through the corner entry and gentle open space. The architectural character and scale suggests a building that respects the community and is humble in its expression. The building embodies the quality of quiet strength with interior spaces that provide a richness of light and color and a structural expression that is both appropriate and stimulating. The attention paid to detail and the intersection of materials shows great sensitivity and respect. It is without doubt that this building will continue to become the focal point of the community and a place of interaction and learning for years to come.

Honor Award

Peninsula College, Science & Technology Building

Jury Comments:
This building is a beautiful example of integration with site, expression of material and structure all of which is done through a minimal architectural language. One of the most striking qualities of the building is that it sits very lightly on the earth. The roof system above the north south circulation path extends through the entire length of the building is compositionally positioned so that it reads visually above the solid brick elements of the classroom spaces. This very simple move provides a continuous horizontal line implying that the building extends into the landscape in the manner of a Mondrian painting. The covered roof extending beyond the confines of the building at the main entry provides an open and welcoming porch. The east façade facing the commons is articulated with a conference room projected from the façade and creating an articulated connection to the commons. The basic parti of classroom and faculty office spaces expressed as solids with punched window openings provides a compelling contrast to the transparency of the circulation and common spaces.
