The core of AIA Washington Council’s advocacy work is done by its policy committees. Within the committee structure, issues are brought to the Council’s attention, debated and referred to the Board for executive action. If you want to be involved in advocating for the architecture profession, this is where you get started. AIA Washington Council members may join one of more committees at any time. Most committee work is done via conference call. If you are interested in participating, please contact the committee chair. If you would like to bring an issue to the attention of the Council for consideration in our advocacy efforts, please contact the appropriate policy committee chair or AIA Washington Council staff.
The Carbon Policy Committee reviews Washington state climate change-related bills, carbon pricing policies and other energy efficient building incentives.

The Codes Committee address building, energy and other codes that impact architects’ work. In particular, the committee monitors the actions of the State Building Codes Council (SBBC) and advocates on behalf of the SBBC before the legislature.

Livability and Affordability Committee
The Livability & Affordability Committee advocates for the benefits of robust regional planning, tracking issues relating to affordable housing, planning, transportation, protection of the Growth Management Act and other related issues.

The Practice Committee reviews issues affecting the practice of architecture such as contracts, Quality Based Selection and changes to our state Practice Act. Many of the issues addressed by this committee may require administrative rather than legislative action. Members of the committee work with the State Board of Architects to craft legislative fixes to our Practice Act to address recent NCARB and other desired changes.

Subcommittee: Alternative Project Delivery
Alternative Project Delivery is a Subcommittee of the Practice Committee. It reviews all forms of project delivery, including design-bid-build and alternative project delivery. Public Private Partnerships (“P3”) and Design/Build are additional issues currently under review.

The Taxes/Education/Capital Budget Committee addresses all forms of taxation; funding of the capital budget; and legislative issues dealing with education facilities and funding for K-12 schools and higher education.
